Elmendorf AFB/Fort Richardson

Joint Base AFB/Fort Richardson

Elmendorf AFB and Fort Richardson not only military installations here but they are significant communities in Anchorage as they bring thousands of new faces to Alaska. The bases were established in 1940 where Fort Richardson was the original base and the airfield was Elmendorf Airfield. When Fort Richardson moved it's operation Elmendorf Air Force base was officially established. Both of the bases were key to supporting operations during World War II and the Cold War. Today the bases are home to thousands of activity members and their families.

Every couple of years Elmendorf AFB plays host to the Arctic Thunder Airshow, which serves as an open house to the Anchorage community thanking them for their support of the military members. The Army and the Air Force members give an excellent show of military tactics and high flying stunts from the Airbourne Infantry drop to the Thunderbirds high speed acrobatics.

Year round, families move in and out of Alaska through their PCS moves. Military members and their families have a daunting task of moving all the way to the "great white north." If you are a member preparing for a PCS to Alaska please feel free to learn more about Anchorage and our communities on my website or for more information and questions please email me, cecelia@cecelianims.com.
